The north end parking lot and grounds at Burford District Elementary School were bustling early evening on Wednesday last week as the School Council hosted its “Fun Fair”. From modest beginnings six years ago, the annual event has developed into a major community party as students, parents and others gather to enjoy a wide variety of fun activities and celebrate the approaching summer season.
A Burford team took centre stage - literally - in Brant’s premier fund-raiser in the fight against cancer on Friday night. “The Nite Lites”, captained by Harley resident Anne Robinson, had the honour of taking to the track at Lions Park, in Brantford, immediately following the Survivors’ Lap to lead the 2013 Relay for Life. The team was chosen to start the Relay as the only team that has been there from the very beginning when the local Relay for Life event began in 2001.
Victory was extra sweet for young Burford cook/ baker Megan Proper at a national baking competition. The 20 year-old student of Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute not only won the gold medal in Baking at the Skills Canada National Competition, competing against the top post-secondary Baking students in Canada, but she is the first student from the Institute to ever win this title.
